From the Chain Series
Turning Philadelphia's 9th district police barriers into a linked system, a chain, felt like a necessitous act of repossession. While making in a meditative mode of repetition I’m thinking of access, rights, race, limits, and loss: brokenness + boundaries, mending/remembering, decay, discipline, denial, delusions, and distress. When a system is broken, when it's parts don't function as a whole, where does mending begin/how does it happen, can it?
These boards are bright but ugly, aging, rotting, decayed, handmade, hand painted yellow ubiquitous barriers that are broken misplaced forgotten. They are a fractured, felt, unseen, unusual, natural material whose life is spent defining, denying, directing. This linked system on the floor reshapes the limits into something limp, something loose, something lighter.
Leftovers
what begins when something else ends?
I often work subtractively using the bandsaw as a carving tool, during this process I find myself increasingly interested in the removed pieces accumulating as the originally conceived project becomes realized. The Leftovers series pieces these otherwise discarded elements together creating small wall-hanging assemblages. The act of building a renewed form from remnants stands in as metaphor for the potential of inventive regrowth given the increasing scarcity of resources.
