“So many people are shut up tight inside themselves like boxes, yet they would open up, unfolding quite wonderfully, if only you were interested in them. ”
— Sylvia Plath
a note on bandsaw boxes:
The bandsaw box technique utilizes the directional growth of a tree (grain direction) to dissect (using the bandsaw) and eliminate (or save for future, smaller boxes) the interior sections (these negative spaces will become drawers and containers). The remaining pieces from the original block of wood are reassembled (using a long grain to long grain glue lamination) thus circumventing the necessity of internal joinery. The boxes I produce using this method represent sculptural form while serving a basic functional need of storage (whether or not these boxes serve the function adequately is not a primary concern.) They are not designed for utility but to engage the imagination, test out formal relationships, and encourage a tactile experience that exploits the sculptural capacity this medium and method provoke.
